As fewer ski areas remain open in Vermont, and warm temps continue to melt away our precious snow, it's important to take advantage of nice days to make some spring turns!
We flexed some work time today to head north to Jay Peak Resort near the Canadian border. The sun was shining as we arrived to see corduroy on the groomed trails. It had been cold enough last night to set up the snow, which made for fast turns in the early morning. As the morning progressed, the sun had its effect. The snow got corned up and soft. With freshly waxed skis, we had a blast making springy turns on trails like Jet and Haynes.
Despite the spring temperatures, the shady areas stayed firm. They were bumpy and challenging. After noontime, we ventured onto a couple of runs (such as Kitzbuehel and Milk Run) that had finally soaked up some sunshine. The sunny side of the trail had soft bumps and turns, while the shade still created noisy turns. I enjoyed picking my way through the soft bumps and dirt patches on Kitz.
We looked longingly at Jay's fun gladed runs, which were now heavily melted out on much of the mountain. We did dip briefly into Timbuktu glade, near the top of the Jet chair, to see what it was like. There was a lot of tree litter and only a few spots sunny enough to have soft snow. Oh, well. We'll have to come back during the winter!
There were not many people skiing today and it was nice skiing right up to the lift. Gotta love midweek skiing!
Clear views to the East today included the white-capped White Mountains in New Hampshire. It was a lovely, mellow day to be out on the hill. And we topped off the day with a maple creemee in Enosburg Falls. Sweet!
