Cross country skis and trail with deer tracks on trail

I thought I was getting first tracks, but some deer poached the cross-country trail!

Wow, recent skiing in Colorado — errr, I mean Vermont — has been great!

This weekend's snowstorm brought another 12+ inches to the spine of the Green Mountains. But it also brought ungodly amounts of wind!

This combo happens a lot here. A storm that brings the magnificent white stuff is typically followed by strong winds. This can be a buzz kill if your plans include riding a chairlift or gondola.

Luckily, the Skimeister and I enjoy all kinds of skiing. We've had fun sliding around in the woods and also going to Nordic centers during extra-windy or cold days.

Did you know the stake near the top of Mt. Mansfield had 95 inches of snow as of tonight, February 17? Nice!

But I also saw an online post from a Sugarbush ski patroller warning folks that if you go off the groomed slopes and something happens, do not take your skis off/board off. You'll sink in a lot and it will take time and energy to get out of the snow. This is because there hasn't been a thaw and freeze cycle so there's no real base under the new snow. They also reminded folks to ski with a buddy or two. Good reminders!

And the National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of increased potential for avalanches in the mountains of northern Vermont. See the Burlington NWS website for details, and please stay safe out there, folks!

Here are some photos from the snowy, windy weekend of February 15, 2025, in northern Vermont. Now we need to get back to shoveling...
