Ah, skiing at Solitude looks lovely!

Nothing like checking out <link http: www.skiloveland.com themountain reports snowreport.aspx external-link-new-window>western Web cams to get you thinking about winter. Arapahoe Basin in Colorado fired up its lifts for customers on October 10. Yeah, that's early. They say it's their earliest opening ever. Looks like they beat Loveland again this year.

My husband and I have been considering where we'd like to go for our western trip this year. We typically go for a one- to two-week trip each winter. We've just about settled on Salt Lake City and the the ski areas that are within an hour's drive of the city: Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude and maybe another.

Mmmmm...Utah powder...at Solitude

We love Colorado resorts but flying there is not cheap (especially to places like Telluride!) and hotels and lift tickets aren't cheap either! I have a sister near Vail who lets us crash in her guestroom—yes, life is sweet sometimes—so we often ski Vail while sometimes combining a trip over to another resort such as Crested Butte, Telluride or Copper.

But we thought we'd switch things up this year by hitting Utah's famous powder. I've never been, but my skimeister has. And they have an amazing multi-resort lift ticket that would bring our ski tickets in at about $42 a day. Nice. Really nice.

Orbitz seems to have decent air and hotel packages...we better book soon before seats are gone!
