With my light backcountry skis attached to my feet, I sat in a tree today and soaked up the sun. The small tree had a crook in it that allowed me to kick back without getting my ski pants damp. I enjoyed a delicious bagel with a view of snowy woods, sunlit trees and blue skies. The only noise I heard was the soft fluttering sounds of old beech leaves and loose birch bark on trees nearby. That's my kind of Sunday brunch!
This brunch was served near the Gardiner's Lane backcountry ski trail up at Bolton Valley. While a bunch of folks were having their last hurrah on the lifts (it was closing day at Bolton Valley Resort), I was taking a spin on the very quiet backcountry trails on my waxless skis. There is still a whole bunch of snow up here but today for the first time it really felt like spring had arrived.
I was in just one layer for much of my ski tour. Some water spots were beginning to open up here and there, including at the bottom of Gardiner's Lane. The snow was soft or corned up and the sunniest spots were damp enough to bring your skis to a quick halt.
We've got more spring skiing to do! Woot!
