We took advantage of warm temperatures and sunshine today by hitting the trail around lunchtime! We put on our plastic backcountry boots and skins on our skis and up we went. We climbed into the Bolton backcountry trail network and found lots of snow.
It was so warm I was down to a light fleece top for the climb. Later I would don a jacket and a helmet for a tour around Birch Loop and a descent on Gardners' Lane. The trails had narrow, packed tracks from other skiers over the last couple of days, but there was plenty of powder to be had just to the side and in the trees.
We came across some cool wing marks in the fresh snow. Judging from the finite trail of small tracks on the snow, we were looking at evidence of a mouse's last moments. We're thinking an owl left the wing marks.
Bolton Valley Resort's Nordic center was reporting up to a foot of new snow over the last week, and a 30-inch base in the backcountry. I didn't hit the bottom, that's for sure!
There's nothing like getting out in the sun and snow to get some exercise. It was gorgeous and it put me in a good mood —even as I returned to the office.
